The Cocktail Hour ft. CHEROKEE

Happy Friday peeps!

I thought to counteract this dreary Vancouver weather, I’d infuse your afternoon with some smooth french house music. Just imagine you’re on a sunny beach in France and let Cherokee groove you through the workday.

Been meaning to post Cherokee for a while and we finally got enough to do a whole hour on the BBQ. Two hot mixes coming down the pipe!

White Noise Vancouver presents: THE KNOCKS

It’s with great pleasure that I get to announce that The Knocks are coming back to Van City!

theknocks

I’m stoked because this show will mark the 1 year anniversary of the White Noise events we’ve come to know and love at the Electric Owl. Congrats on an amazing year boys! Honestly it kind of freaks me out that its only been 1 year… The White Noise events have been such a staple in my life, I cant be the only one that feel like its already a Vancouver institution. Stereotype what?

Its only been a couple months since we saw The Knocks steal the show opening for RAC at the Commodore but we just couldn’t wait to have them back. I got the chance to hang out with B-Roc and JPatt back stage and they are some of the coolest dudes set to blow up the dance music world.

Here at the BBQ we’ve had these guys on our radar since 2010’s Dancing with the DJ and were still buzzing over their Comfortable EP that dropped just last year. JPatt’s background in soul and funk and B-Roc’s years spent immersed in trip-hop and hip-hop beats has fused these guys together into a dynamic cred-pop duo.

I think what hooked me on their style is their ability to work with a wide array of collaborators from all corners of dance music and turn out a signature Knocks sound. It speaks to their ability and flexibility when they can capture the essence of a collaborator and still come through with something bigger and Knocksier.. Knocksier, yea I said it.

Reaching all the way to Australia we get the dreamy, love infused vocals of the beautiful Miss Connie from Sneaky Sound Systems singing your hook on Dreaming. Or a signature crunchy bassline from London’s Mat Zo on Get Down 2 Get Up. But being based out of New York means they don’t necessarily have to look far to find some super talented friends. From Treasure Fingers to St. Lucia, The Knocks seem to get it right with whomever they work with.

This summer you can expect to see them take the festival circuit by storm but next month we get them all to ourselves in everyone’s favorite little rave cave, The Electric Owl for White Noise. See you on the dance floor!

The Cocktail Hour ft. Option4

Tonight we’re bringing things back to East Vans best kept secret: The Waldorf Hotel. We’ve had some ups and downs recently Waldorf but I’m more than glad to see you getting back to your old self with tonight’s fine, fine, artists.

It’s a White Noise party motherfuckers. You know how we do. We got the usual suspects PatLok and WMNstudies but also as usual we’ve got some amazing imports and also a very special local addition to the bill. Keeping things fresh on the 45s is East Van’s own, Dunks from The Funk Hunters!

Expect the full funk attack this Friday but I’ve featured those boys plenty on the BBQ so lets talk about Option4! Hailing from Denver, Option4 is hot off a couple of wicked remixes. Like this Sammy Bananas remix (we had Sammy this summer at the Owl!)

Option4 is a dancy tech-house DJ but what I like the most about these Denver dudes is this natural gangsterness to their live mixes. Option4 and other Colorado artists like Pretty Lights and Big Gigantic seem to have this hip hop influence which makes their shows hit a bit harder. Maybe I’m just a sucker for Pharoahe Monche and Snoop samples but I’m really looking forward to him ripping up the basement of the Waldorf.

Here’s your Cocktail Hour! From Option4, in all his rap sampling glory. See you kids tonight.

The Cocktail Hour ft. Plastic Plates

Once again I’m gonna sit here and spread the good word of nu-disco and house music. Do you like to “dance?” or perhaps “get down?” well this is the mix for you my friend.

Plastic Plates is an Australian export, currently cutting rugs all over North America with his sweet sweet dance music. You can catch Mr. Plates tonight at the Electric Owl for thee ol’ White Noise Party. They don’t have carpet to cut through though, just a sturdy d-floor you can really take it all out on.

Happy Friday and I’ll see you kids out there 😉

The Cocktail Hour ft. Treasure Fingers

#FlashbackFriday all the way to 2009

It was a different era of dance music back then. A young me was listening to the punky roots of electro with guys like the Bloody Beetroots and MSTRKRFT, all the while dudes like Treasure Fingers were busy working away on the disco revival.

Well guess what Treasure, it took me 5 years but I’m really feeling the cut of your jib. Maybe I needed to be in my late 20s to appreciate the finer sides of dance music but the important part is I’m here now!

This mix holds the fuck up. He even noted that there are still some unreleased tracks on here. That’s how it goes I guess, the world isn’t always read to catch the fever. There are some absolute classics in here though, Ready 2 Wear is an all time fav and Empire of the Sun is timeless.
