The Funk Hunters & Chali 2na – ILLectric EP

Happy Funky Friday y’all!

Homies Nick and Dunks have just delivered a new EP! With who else but the legendary rapper from the Jurrasic 5, Chali 2na. The production is heavy and funky and god damn can Chali 2na flow.

The pairing of west coast bass funk and the iconic rapper shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The boys productions have always been steeped in hip hop influence and 2na slips into the genre like a fish into water.

Get ready to Funk the Halls this December when they do back to back shows at The Commodore Ballroom.

The Cocktail Hour ft. Kaytranada

Kaytranada has just released his first full length LP! I’ve really enjoyed watching Kay rise from the muddy waters of Soundcloud to become one of Canada’s bright northern lights.

99.9% is full of the dancey hip hop beats you love him for and spread over a nice mix of warm, melodic funk.

There is a slough of talented collaborators like BADBADNOTGOOD, AlunaGeorge, and Little Dragon but Kaytranada also shines on his own. My favorite track is Lite Spots and its the bouncy and funkiest.

Check out the album here

Raury – Devil’s Whisper

If you haven’t heard of Raury yet, catching him at Fortune tonight might be the last chance to see him before he goes big time. I first heard him on a track with SBTRKT but Devil’s Whisper is the one that made me realized this kid is on to something special. It draws you in with its tribal percussion and choir-like vocals and then, half way through, the track breaks into booming electronic bass with Raury rapping overtop. I’ve never heard anything like it.

Kendrick Lamar is a generational talent. While I only consider myself partially familiar with his work (its not my go-to genre) I like to think I can recognize an artist with staying power. I first saw Kendrick at Coachella in 2012 as when he was brought up on stage by Snoop and Dre to be recognized as a huge up and comer. That was right before Good Kid, MAAD city dropped and took the world by storm.

Now hot off his latest album ‘To Pimp a Butterfly,’ Kendrick is headlining a stage that has seen the likes of Kanye, Kudi, and Public Enemy. Stick around and watch King Kendrick receive the Sasquatch Crown as he closes down the main stage on Monday night.

The Cocktail Hour ft. EKALI

Ekali is a Vancouver based artist that is affiliated with Chapel Sound and Flow-fi. He’s been taking the world by storm as of late as Canada’s sole participant at the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo and his track Unfaith was sampled in Drake’s song “Wednesday Night Interlude” . Ekali’s sound focuses mainly on bass and soul with intricate layers of texture. With his energetic live sets, he will have you grooving happily under the summer sky.

The Cocktail Hour ft. KAYTRANADA

Guys this is big news! our favorite Haitian-Canadian producer and taste maker has landed a BBC residency. That’s right. KAY-muthafucking-TRANADA has his own radio show coming to you every month. He joins the ranks of Pete Tong and Diplo and I couldn’t be more excited.

His debut show last Friday was a soulful journey with the likes of Todd Terje, Taylor McFerrin, The Internet and fellow Montreal artist Pomo. Listen to his first hour over at the BBC webite here
