White Noise Vancouver presents: THE KNOCKS

It’s with great pleasure that I get to announce that The Knocks are coming back to Van City!

theknocks

I’m stoked because this show will mark the 1 year anniversary of the White Noise events we’ve come to know and love at the Electric Owl. Congrats on an amazing year boys! Honestly it kind of freaks me out that its only been 1 year… The White Noise events have been such a staple in my life, I cant be the only one that feel like its already a Vancouver institution. Stereotype what?

Its only been a couple months since we saw The Knocks steal the show opening for RAC at the Commodore but we just couldn’t wait to have them back. I got the chance to hang out with B-Roc and JPatt back stage and they are some of the coolest dudes set to blow up the dance music world.

Here at the BBQ we’ve had these guys on our radar since 2010’s Dancing with the DJ and were still buzzing over their Comfortable EP that dropped just last year. JPatt’s background in soul and funk and B-Roc’s years spent immersed in trip-hop and hip-hop beats has fused these guys together into a dynamic cred-pop duo.

I think what hooked me on their style is their ability to work with a wide array of collaborators from all corners of dance music and turn out a signature Knocks sound. It speaks to their ability and flexibility when they can capture the essence of a collaborator and still come through with something bigger and Knocksier.. Knocksier, yea I said it.

Reaching all the way to Australia we get the dreamy, love infused vocals of the beautiful Miss Connie from Sneaky Sound Systems singing your hook on Dreaming. Or a signature crunchy bassline from London’s Mat Zo on Get Down 2 Get Up. But being based out of New York means they don’t necessarily have to look far to find some super talented friends. From Treasure Fingers to St. Lucia, The Knocks seem to get it right with whomever they work with.

This summer you can expect to see them take the festival circuit by storm but next month we get them all to ourselves in everyone’s favorite little rave cave, The Electric Owl for White Noise. See you on the dance floor!

The Cocktail Hour ft. SABOTA

sabota

The name “Sabota” comes from the infamous area in Nelson BC, where kids congregate late at night to smoke weed, hook up and watch the sun come up. Both Max Ulis and Robbie Slade have (if somewhat indirect) roots in the area, making it a fitting concept for their collaboration. Their sound is inspired by what happened on Sabota Road, and on similar streets in similar places, in the hour just before sunrise.

SABOTA is live deep house. brimming with analogue warmth. Showcasing the difference between an 808 in your headphones and an 808 in the club. We’ve featured SABOTA in a Cocktail Hour once before and I’m happy to introduce this mix that started it all over year ago. It doesn’t feature as many of their originals but they’ve been hard at work this year and I’m gonna embed some bonus tunes for you guys on this one.

Come check out Robbie and Max at the Electric Owl tonight!

The Cocktail Hour ft. Plastic Plates

Once again I’m gonna sit here and spread the good word of nu-disco and house music. Do you like to “dance?” or perhaps “get down?” well this is the mix for you my friend.

Plastic Plates is an Australian export, currently cutting rugs all over North America with his sweet sweet dance music. You can catch Mr. Plates tonight at the Electric Owl for thee ol’ White Noise Party. They don’t have carpet to cut through though, just a sturdy d-floor you can really take it all out on.

Happy Friday and I’ll see you kids out there 😉

Basically my favorite monthly event in Vancouver, local homies Pat Lok and WMNSTUDIES have been consistently bringing the DJs with the best Nu Disco, Indi-Dance, and every other kind of feel good house music. This month we have the Sultan of Summer himself, VICEROY.

Mr. Summer Time All The Time is no stranger to the BBQ. Regularly headlining our Cocktail Hour with mix after mix of glorious tropi-cool disco house, hes been on my ‘need to see’ list for some time. The  White Noise boys have come through once again so come get loose with me at the Owl this Friday!

The Cocktail Hour ft. Pat Lok

I always get excited talking about local talent and homie Pat Lok is no exception. He and WMNSTUDIES throw some of the best regular dance parties in Vancouver. The monthly White Noise party at the Electric Owl has featured some of my favorite artists like Moon Boots and Bit Funk.

But behind it all are two of my favorite openers. I’ve seen them steal the show at places like Celebrities and The Imperial and they never fail to bring feet to the dance floor. So its time to celebrate them!

Check out this Discobelle Mix by Pat. Its full of local originals, remixes, and all around sexiness. Make sure to check out the next White Noise party too!
